Cultural group training for mobile talent

 This global multi-national organization experienced several cross-cultural misunderstanding and miscommunication incidents after entering into a significant long-term joint venture with partners in both Japan and Italy.

Challenge

This global multi-national organization had entered into a significant long-term joint venture with partners in both Japan and Italy.


Very quickly, it became obvious that their talent would require support with cultural awareness and agility after several cross-cultural misunderstanding and miscommunication incidents.


These small but impactful incidents had caused concern amongst all the JV partner organizations and had delayed some critical early projects and milestones. 

Solution

NetExpat was engaged by the global mobility team at the multi-national organisation to support a consultative review of the challenges and potential solutions.


The cohort of mobile talent was made up of 3 distinct groups that included those planning to relocate, frequent business travellers, and a group who would remain 100% remote and support the JV from a distance.


As a result, a series of group trainings by cohort were planned, to ensure that each group had an adequate amount of awareness and training to support their individual and collective needs.



Training sessions were quickly deployed, including face to face immersive group training for the employees and their partners/spouses who were relocating, alongside access to a suite of tech tools that aided their learning and provided ongoing resources.

Outcome

The participants reacted positively to the training and recognized that the multi-national was also considering their role in delivering duty to care to not only the employees, but their families too.   

Relocating families were ready to head to both Italy and Japan, equipped with cultural insights that helped them to integrate quickly, and successfully.


The business travellers and remote support teams were equally ready to play their part in achieving successful outcomes, ensuring that no time was lost through cultural missteps.
