Value of Intercultural Training for Experienced Multicultural Leaders
The APAC Head of Regulatory Affairs for a Fragrance and Beauty Multinational Corporation relocated from Paris to Singapore. This individual manages teams across multiple locations including Jakarta, Singapore, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Yokohama, and also has colleagues from the Philippines and South Korea. His role involves ensuring compliance and product safety, which is crucial for enabling business operations. This move was driven by the desire to work in the dynamic and fast-paced APAC region. Upon relocation, participation in NetExpat Intercultural Training and coaching with a local NetExpat Consultant, facilitated his transition.
Challenge
The employee faced several challenges upon relocating to Singapore. The primary challenge was cultural adaptation, as he had to adjust to the new cultural environment and business practices; in addition to integration into a new team, understanding the local business culture, etc. In parallel, managing the logistical aspects of relocation and adapting to a new pace of life and work posed challenges.
Solution
To address these challenges, the employee engaged in intercultural training sessions with a local Consultant to understand the cultural nuances and business etiquette in Singapore. He focused on building trust with his new team by being open, listening, and creating a safe space for communication. Sam adapted his leadership style to fit the local context, emphasizing humility, adaptability, and leveraging his strengths in communication and multiculturalism.
I had the pleasure of being coached by Alka as part of an intercultural training program organized by my employers as part of my expat relocation package. Having benefited from numerous executive coaching opportunities and cultural trainings in recent years, and having relocated numerous times for work, I had reasonable expectation going into this and thought it would be a modestly useful discussion -yet Alka managed to be a cut above the rest. Her astute and insightful communication style, coupled with an impressive background in Neuroscience, rich cultural heritage and diverse lived experiences, make her uniquely qualified to navigate through thorny topics and demystify complex social constructs to even 'seasoned' individuals - no easy feat! Methodical in her coaching, yet adaptable enough to customize on-the-go, I personally derived a lot of benefits from our short yet effective collaboration.
